Miami Herald

After my husband and I relocated to Tallahassee for his job, I was hired in September 2015 to join the Miami Herald's state Capitol bureau, which is a joint operation with the Tampa Bay Times. Everything we produce in our five-person bureau is shared among both newspapers and websites, multiplying the reach and influence of our Capitol coverage across Florida.

My primary coverage area is policy affecting K-12 public education, but I also track legislation related to gun laws, immigration and criminal justice issues. My job includes analyzing complex legislation, investigating the motivations and impacts of it and reporting my findings through stories, blogs, videos and social media posts.

In April 2017, I was part of a four-person team to cover the formal apology, growing controversy and subsequent resignation of a Miami state senator who used a racial slur and other profanities in insulting other lawmakers.

In 2016, I was also a lead reporter in the Herald/Times' coverage of Florida's nationally watched U.S. Senate race.  I followed the Democratic candidates for 13 months -- writing policy stories, candidate profiles and investigations into their backgrounds and campaign claims.
